Police Academy

Police Academy Program

The Basic Peace Officer Course offered by the Navarro College Police Academy consists of 779 hours, of which 720 is required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) curriculum.  The program is designed to prepare students to pass the Peace Officer licensing exam given at the end of the program.  The course consists of 42 topics ranging from 2 hours to 74 hours in length.  Approximately one-third of the class is devoted to developing physical skills required to become a peace officer. The program includes training in the following areas: current penal & traffic law, defensive tactics, first aid, patrol tactics, cultural diversity, and firearms. All cadets are required to participate in physical training in both the Full-time track and Part-time track.
Additional hours include extended skills training for Active Shooter, OC (Pepper Spray) Certification and a comprehensive review for the State Licensing Exam.

The Police Academy also offers an array of in-service courses to current officers who are state mandated to complete 40 hours of training every two years. The Police Academy offers approximately 50 in-service courses each year.

*NOTE: Students must meet all eligibility requirements of TCOLE and the Navarro College Police Advisory Board to enroll in the Police Academy program. Visit the Admission Requirements page for more details.

"I have been in charge of our FTO program over the past six years.  During that timeframe we have hired many different police recruits from multiple different academies throughout the metroplex.  The Navarro College Police Academy graduates that we have hired over the past two years have picked up on the nuances of our tactics and procedures quicker and easier than most other academy graduates.  The training and knowledge that the Navarro graduates receive during their time in the academy allows them to adjust to our training with little to no problems.  We have hired thirteen Navarro graduates over the past two years and all have completed their FTO training successfully!"
- Lt. Kevin Harrelson, Rowlett Police Department

NOTICE TO STUDENTS REGARDING LICENSING

Effective September 1st 2017, HB 1508 amends the Texas Occupations Code Section 53 that requires education providers to notify you a potential or enrolled student that a criminal history may make you ineligible for an occupational license upon program completion.

The following website provides links to information about the licensing process and requirements. www.navarrocollege.edu/academics/police-academy/admission-requirements.html or go to http://www.tcole.texas.gov/content/civilian-non-licensed-person.

You may obtain more information about our program and application process to the Police Academy by visiting our “Admissions Process” page at www.navarrocollege.edu/academics/police-academy/admission-requirements/.

Should you wish to request a review of the impact of criminal history on your potential Texas Peace Officer License prior to or during your quest for a degree, you can visit this link and request a “Criminal History Evaluation.” https://records.txdps.state.tx.us/dpswebsite/criminalhistory/

This information is being provided to all persons who apply or enroll in the program with notice of the requirements as described above, regardless of whether or not the person has been convicted of a criminal offense.

Additionally, HB 1508 authorizes licensing agencies to require reimbursements when a student fails to receive the required notice.
